Breaking the Unbreakable to Save a LifeThere have been a number of times when God has orchestrated impossible circumstances in my life that have led to divine appointments, like someone calling a car dealership and having the receptionist transfer the call to my cell phone instead of the service dept... repeatedly. God uses things like this to put me in contact with people going through life's tough situations; people that need to hear stories of God's Grace and love. I want to tell you about one such story.

I was fishing with a really close friend and was using an "unbreakable," ultra-lite fishing pole. When I got back to the shore, I put the rod on the dock, grabbed my gear & my fish and stepped out of the boat... right on to the pole. To my amazement the pole, which was laying flat on the dock, snapped in half! I was shocked to say the least and somewhat upset, I had seen this pole bent nearly in half and not break, and yet there it lay flat on the dock in 2 pieces.

Well, the next day as I was on my way to replace the fishing rod I stopped at my favorite Starbuck's Famous Coffee place. I got to the door a step and a half ahead of an elderly lady and opened the door for her. As she passed me going into the coffee shop I said to her jokingly, "Well, God still has use for me as a door opener."

She looked at me and said, "Oh, do you know God?"

I replied, "He's my best friend."

She hesitated a moment and asked, "Would you sit down and talk with me for a moment?" I said "Sure" and we got our drinks and sat down. She started sharing with me about how she had lost quite a bit of money in stocks, and investments and how scared and depressed she had become. Then she told me that she had held a gun to her head every night for about three weeks but was unable to pull the trigger.

I looked at her and said. "Would you like to hear a story?"

I spend the next hour and a half telling her the incredible stories that have made up my life recently and then prayed with her. As we got up to leave I said to her "God just told me why my 'unbreakable' fishing rod broke." I looked her in the eyes and said, "If that rod had not broken, I would not have come to this Starbucks this morning at the same time you did. I would not have opened the door and made my joke about still being useful as God's door opener. We would not have sat down and had coffee together. And I would not have had an opportunity to tell you that God loves you." She was so excited she hugged me. As she left the Starbuck's, seemed full of hope.

For me, this story shows the lengths that God is willing to go to make sure that divine appointments happen and people's lives are touched.

Has something unusual happened in your life recently? It may be that God is orchestrating a divine appointment for you, too. We all have "stories" to tell. Perhaps you should be open to the possibility that there may be people out there that need to hear YOUR stories and through them, see God's love for all of us.

"This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life."
