Breaking the Unbreakable to Save a LifeThere have been a number of times when God has orchestrated impossible circumstances in my life that have led to divine appointments, like someone calling a car dealership and having the receptionist transfer the call to my cell phone instead of the service dept... repeatedly. God uses things like this to put me in contact with people going through life's tough situations; people that need to hear stories of God's Grace and love. I want to tell you about one such story.

I was fishing with a really close friend and was using an "unbreakable," ultra-lite fishing pole. When I got back to the shore, I put the rod on the dock, grabbed my gear & my fish and stepped out of the boat... right on to the pole. To my amazement the pole, which was laying flat on the dock, snapped in half! I was shocked to say the least and somewhat upset, I had seen this pole bent nearly in half and not break, and yet there it lay flat on the dock in 2 pieces.

Well, the next day as I was on my way to replace the fishing rod I stopped at my favorite Starbuck's Famous Coffee place. I got to the door a step and a half ahead of an elderly lady and opened the door for her. As she passed me going into the coffee shop I said to her jokingly, "Well, God still has use for me as a door opener."

She looked at me and said, "Oh, do you know God?"

I replied, "He's my best friend."

She hesitated a moment and asked, "Would you sit down and talk with me for a moment?" I said "Sure" and we got our drinks and sat down. She started sharing with me about how she had lost quite a bit of money in stocks, and investments and how scared and depressed she had become. Then she told me that she had held a gun to her head every night for about three weeks but was unable to pull the trigger.

I looked at her and said. "Would you like to hear a story?"

I spend the next hour and a half telling her the incredible stories that have made up my life recently and then prayed with her. As we got up to leave I said to her "God just told me why my 'unbreakable' fishing rod broke." I looked her in the eyes and said, "If that rod had not broken, I would not have come to this Starbucks this morning at the same time you did. I would not have opened the door and made my joke about still being useful as God's door opener. We would not have sat down and had coffee together. And I would not have had an opportunity to tell you that God loves you." She was so excited she hugged me. As she left the Starbuck's, seemed full of hope.

For me, this story shows the lengths that God is willing to go to make sure that divine appointments happen and people's lives are touched.

Has something unusual happened in your life recently? It may be that God is orchestrating a divine appointment for you, too. We all have "stories" to tell. Perhaps you should be open to the possibility that there may be people out there that need to hear YOUR stories and through them, see God's love for all of us.

"This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life."

Bob, so good to hear you comment on my comment about "books". As we get older, as you and I have brother, LOL, we have stored a vast amount of "testimonials", of how God has worked in our lives inside. I have been saying this to every pastor/laymen I know for years, and that is that it is our spiritual duty to share with everyone we can. We are His workmanship, His tools, if we remain silent, if we don't share the miricles of God in our lives with the saved, and unsaved (whomever God puts in our path, like the old lady you opened the door for) the we are missing the point of being a believer. No wonder believers and unbelievers alike in seasons of dispair are getting divorced, or giving up on God! We are His "light", in a dark world that has no hope. I have many, many stories of God's growing me up, or His personal teaching me His truths, and have in just the past few months begun to record them in a book my daughter gave me. Our heritage in the Lord is SO important for future generations. Keep it up brother...and hey, maybe oneday we will be able to meet at Starbucks! It could be a "devine" appointment! Bless this work, and Word Lord, and use my brothers book, and blog to its fullest, that many woud be infected with the Love and Joy of the Lord Jesus! bro. R

Bob, I wanted to thank you for sharing at our church earlier this year. You were such a blessing and encourager. I have had many conversations come up with people that were there to hear the events that have taken place in your life and how God has used you. Keep up the good work of following in Jesus foot steps. Remember that we won't know the full impact of those that are touched by what God does in and through our lives until we all meet in heaven!

Thank you again for your willingness to share!

Mr. Elliot, I would like to share part of my testimony with you. I will call you, but I also would like to know if you have an email address where I can write you. I am a younger man of twenty-nine, and I am looking to step into and through the refiner's fire in my life in order to gain the value of recent life experiences. Cheers.

I really liked this passage from your book Bob. I can tell that you are a good writer and have had a lot of experience talking with God, and teaching others about Jesus. I think I also have the gift to go out there and tell people about the lord, but I also dig deep into the core issues to really help people know the lord and overcome their personal struggles so they can have a close relationship with God. I have prayed and hope that you will come to Texas to preach or do some public speeches about your book and your life. Talk soon, Molly
